Upcoming Walks

Supporting as many people close to our hearts, Leon Stillwell our Local Butcher in Midhurst was diagnosed with Stage 2, borderline Stage 3 lung cancer.

Since then, he’s battled through numerous rounds of chemotherapy, faced the uncertainty that comes with a cancer diagnosis, and just a few week ago underwent major surgery to remove around two-thirds of his right lung.

It’s been one hell of a journey for him and his family, and there’s still a long road ahead and we would like to Walk in November for Leon and support him in his journey and help raise money for charities that specialise in supporting people affected by lung cancer and the areas that have directly impacted his own journey. ❤️

At Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation, it is our mission to ensure everyone diagnosed with lung cancer can live well with the disease for as long as possible.

TUESDAY 10TH NOVEMBER

SLINDON AND NORTH WOOD CIRCULAR 6 MILE WALK – 9.30AM

Meeting at 9.15am for a 9.30am start we will walk approx. 6 miles around the beautiful Slindon Estate. The Slindon Estate covers 1400 hectares of woodlands, parklands and farmlands and has a lovely mix of unforgettable views.

We will take a breath of fresh air as we explore the Slindon and North Wood Circular, a charming journey through the National Trust’s largest traditional estate on the South Downs. We will head toward Nore Hill, where we can find a beautiful flint archway known as the Folly, built in 1814 so a local Countess could enjoy tea with a view!

The paths are firm, some sections can get quite “muddy and rooty,” so wearing sturdy walking shoes will help you stay comfortable while you take in the panoramic sights of the coast.

The trail also take in Nore Folley and Stane Street. There are some road portions and slightly rougher flinted areas of tracks which can be uneven in places so care must be taken and sturdy walking boots.

There is quiet road walking and stone tracks and some parts can be challenging with some steep parts.

Dogs are more than welcome but please make sure they are on leads going through and land where we come across any livestock on the way.

As before you are responsible for your own health and safety. £2 donation towards the charity of the month and refreshments can be organised with the Forge Cafe before and after directly with them. Maybe organise a well earned lunch for your return. Toilets only at the start and end of the route.

TUESDAY 17TH NOVEMBER

THE NEW CENTURION WAY WALK – 4.5 MILES 9.30AM

Meeting at the Selsey Arms, West Dean, at 9.15am for a 9.30am start we will make our way up the pathway to the steps taking us through the woods onto the Centurion Way where we will enjoy the route to Singleton Station and then onto the new part of the Centurion Way past Cucumber Farm as far as we can get before turning back to our starting point and enjoying the views of Goodwood in the distance.

A mainly flat walk with a couple of inclined parts as we head to the new part of the walk.

Parking, refreshments and facilities are available during opening hours at The Selsey Arms and also West Dean Village Store.

Dogs on leads are welcome, £1 donation for this walk towards our charity of the month. This walk is approx. 4.5 miles

WEST DEAN & CENTURION WAY WALK 2.75 MILES 11.30AM

Meeting at the Selsey Arms, West Dean, at 11.15am for a 11.30am start, we will make our way past the West Dean stores, up a slight incline along the track, past the horses and into the bottom of the hills where we may come across sheep in the fields, crossing over a bridge taking us onto the Centurion Way where we will head back towards the beginning viewing the River Lavant, crossing the road and back to the starting point.

After rain this route can be a little muddy and unsteady for the first part, then once on the Centurion Way it is all flat footpaths.

A mixture of beautiful hill views and river views, with hopefully lots of birds singing, and sheep and horses enroute. Dogs on lead welcome.

Dogs on leads are welcome, £1 donation towards our charity of the month.

Approx. 2.75 miles long, taking approx. 1 – 1.5 hours and refreshments are available to purchase back at the beginning at The Selsey Arms or West Dean Stores near by. WEDNESDAY 25TH NOVEMBER – 2 X 3 MILE WALKS TO BE CONFIRMED

We are walking during December 26 and January 2027 to raise money to be able to provide a Chichester Hospital Pizza Night which is put on by Sophies Legacy,

The money we raise will sponsor a pizza night for the parents/children on Howard ward and NICU at St Richards. These will be delivered on a Friday Night for those receiving care at the time this is provided.

Sophie’s Legacy was created in memorial of Sophie Fairall and the legacy of change she wanted to create.

Sophie had just turned 9 when she was diagnosed with a rare form of childhood cancer called Rhabdomyosarcoma in September 2020. During her treatment, she endured 9 rounds of intense chemotherapy and 7 weeks of radiotherapy.

Sophie never managed to get into remission and in June 2021, after only eight weeks on a programme of maintenance chemotherapy, she relapsed. With no treatment options left Sophie passed away aged 10, in September 2021, just 1 year after her diagnosis.

Sophie wanted the following things changed and this will be her legacy in memory of a remarkable young girl who touched so many lives and we are trying to do our bit whilst we walk.

TUESDAY DECEMBER 8TH

THE WELLDIGGERS ARMS, HESWORTH AND FITTLEWORTH CIRCULAR – 5.6 MILES 9.30AM

We will meet at 9.15am for 9.30am start for a circular walk from The Welldiggers Arms on the outskirts of Petworth in West Sussex. The walking route explores local stretches of woodland and commons, we will visit a pretty church and stunning viewpoint along the way, following peaceful paths that provide a true feeling of escape.

The woodland commons are open access with lots of intersecting paths. The walk includes several climbs and descents throughout, including a couple of short but steep sections.

Several stretches (particularly the bridleway at the beginning and end) can be very muddy after periods of rain and in winter, so good boots are a must, and wellingtons are recommended at wetter times of year.

You will need to negotiate several kissing gates and staggered barriers plus one stile (which has a large gap alongside for dogs).

There is no livestock on the route, just the outside chance of sharing one field with a horse, but it’s still a good idea to bring a lead for your dog. There are three road crossings that need care, but these are either within speed restriction areas or have excellent visibility.

This route is approx. 9km and will take about 3 hours. There will be an option to stop at Fittleworth Village stores halfway around for refreshments and toilets.
